About the Library of Congress

The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution and the largest library in the world, housing millions of books, recordings, photographs, maps, and manuscripts in its collections. Not only does it serve the research needs of Congress in Washington, D.C., its treasures are also available to the American people either by physically visiting the Library or through the more than 19 million digitized sources accessible through its website, www.loc.gov.

Over the years, the Library has developed a strong educational mission of making their primary sources available to America's educators and to provide resources and strategies to support student learning. The Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program builds on the success of the Library's previous educational initiatives, working with a consortium of schools, universities, libraries, and foundations to bring the Library’s vast collection of digitized primary sources into their classrooms.

University of Northern Colorado has been a member of this consortium for the past three years, with a commitment to reaching educators in northern Colorado, other outlying areas of the state, and in 2010, adding Wyoming to our service area.
